Monaco Guide

Two square kilometres on a hillside, with a calendar dictated by the Grand Prix and the yachts.

Monaco is walkable end to end but vertically stacked — public lifts and tunnels save real time between the port and Monte-Carlo. Two weeks a year, the Grand Prix and the Yacht Show, reprice the whole principality, and much of the nightlife runs on a strictly seasonal calendar.

Monaco explained

Hour-by-hour plans drawn by hand — pick one and follow it from first coffee to last call.

The Monaco calendar

The dates that actually move prices, crowds and opening hours.

April

Monte-Carlo Masters (Roquebrune-Cap-Martin)

Clay-court tennis next door in mid-April; the first busy weekend of the season.

May

Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix

Late May: grandstands, closed roads, minimum stays and rates several times the norm.

June

Season opening

Beach clubs, the Sporting Club terraces and Jimmy'z all move into summer programming.

August

Fireworks festival & peak Riviera

The port hosts the international fireworks competition; the coast is at its fullest.

September

Monaco Yacht Show

Late September fills Port Hercule and every hotel room in the principality and Nice.

January

Monte-Carlo Rally

Historic rally stages in the Alpes-Maritimes; a rare busy weekend in the low season.

Seasonal highlights

Spring (Apr–May)
Warm, green, and blooming — perfect for Èze and the coastal paths, before Grand Prix week.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Hot and full: beach clubs, late terraces and the highest hotel occupancy of the year.
Autumn (Sep–Oct)
Warm sea, thinning crowds after the Yacht Show, and the best value of the good-weather months.
Winter (Nov–Mar)
Mild but quiet: several clubs and beach venues close entirely, and the Casino side goes local.

Off-peak intel

  • Early October is the sweet spot — summer water temperature, post-Yacht Show pricing.
  • Avoid Grand Prix and Yacht Show weeks unless that is the trip; expect three- to five-night minimums.
  • Stay in Beaulieu, Cap-d'Ail or Nice and take the six-minute train in for a fraction of the room rate.
  • In winter, confirm seasonal venues are open before you plan an evening around one.
