The Maldives is not a single place to explore so much as a resort you pick and rarely leave; almost every restaurant, bar and activity in this guide sits on a private island reached by seaplane or speedboat, so choosing the right resort is the whole trip. Weather is warm and humid year-round, but the dry season brings calmer seas for snorkelling, diving and the seaplane transfers that double as the best view in the country. Book overwater villas and signature restaurants like Ithaa well ahead, especially over the December–March peak and any full-moon or holiday period.

Best time to visit
December to April is the dry season with the calmest seas and sunniest skies, and also the most expensive and crowded window; May, June and November offer a good balance of weather and value, while August's wetter weather coincides with manta ray season in Baa Atoll.
Getting in
Almost all international flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE) near Male. From there, resorts arrange a seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight transfer, which can take anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour depending on the atoll; seaplanes only fly in daylight, so late-arriving flights may require an overnight in Male.
Getting around
There are no roads between islands, so all movement is by resort speedboat, seaplane or local ferry. Almost every activity in this guide is arranged through your resort's front desk or dive centre rather than booked independently.
What it costs
Overwater villas typically run $800 to $3,000+ a night depending on resort and season, most resorts operate on half-board or full-board plans given the isolation, and a la carte specialty dinners like Ithaa run $150 to $300 per person.

Traveller tips
- Book signature restaurants like Ithaa Undersea Restaurant as soon as your resort stay is confirmed; tables are limited and sell out fast.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen; many resorts restrict other formulas to protect the house reef.
- Confirm your seaplane transfer window when booking flights home — seaplanes stop flying at dusk.
- Alcohol is not sold on local, non-resort islands; it's available only within resort properties and liveaboards.
- Bring a modest cover-up for visits to Male or any local island, where swimwear is not appropriate off the resort.
- Most resorts are cashless for guests, running everything to the room, so confirm gratuity policy at check-in.
