Step one
Reserve Your Security Time
Schiphol lets departing travellers reserve a 15-minute arrival window at the security check before their flight. It is free, it is offered on the airport's own website, and it is the single easiest thing you can do to remove uncertainty from a departure.
Have your boarding pass ready
Check in online and save the boarding pass to your phone's wallet before you leave for the airport.
Security only
The timeslot covers the security check alone. It does not reserve a place at passport control or at bag drop.
Flying to the UK?
After security you still pass passport control, because the UK is outside the Schengen area. Allow time for it.
Timeslots are released by Schiphol and are not always available for every flight or every hour. If none is offered, follow the timeline below instead.
Step two
Smart Departure Timeline
Security only — no passport control on departure. For these flights Schiphol advises being at the airport about 2 hours before departure — add roughly 30 minutes if you are checking a bag, and always check current wait times before you leave.
Arrive at Schiphol
Departures hall. Bag drop first if you have checked luggage.
Security
Your reserved 15-minute window, if you booked one. Liquids and electronics out and ready.
No passport control
Schengen departures go straight from security into the lounge area.
Gate
Check the screens again — gates can change, and some are a long walk away.
Boarding
Boarding usually opens about 40 minutes before departure; the gate closes around 20 minutes before.

Non-Schengen
Flying to London?
London is a non-Schengen departure
The United Kingdom sits outside the Schengen area, so a flight to Heathrow, Gatwick, City or Luton is treated as an international departure.
Passport control after security
You clear the security check first, then pass passport control before you reach the gate. Build that second queue into your timing.
Passport and boarding pass in hand
Keep both accessible — not buried in a bag. A phone boarding pass plus your physical passport is all you need.
Watch the departure screens
Gates change, and at Schiphol some are a 15-minute walk from the main lounge. Re-check the screens after passport control.
Gates close early, and firmly
Airlines close boarding around 20 minutes before departure and do not reopen it, even if you are visible at the desk.
